On May 15, 1988, a man's body was found in a pond off Hwy 27, nine miles south of SR 50 in Clermont. The male was determined to be Caucasian, approximately 5’5”, middle age to elderly with brown hair. He had no teeth and appeared to have been without them for several years. The male was wearing black or grey Jaymar Sansabelt pants size 34”x31”. The cause and manner of death are undetermined, and the man's identity is unknown.

UPDATE: In 2025, detectives submitted John Doe’s DNA to Othram, Inc. for genetic genealogy testing. In June 2026 Othram contacted detectives with a possible lead. They believed they had located the man’s son living in Washington. Detectives contacted the potential relative who confirmed that he last heard from his father, Roy Torvik, in the 1960’s and that Roy was at that time living in Florida. The family assumed Roy had passed away and never reported him missing. The man provided a voluntary DNA sample to Othram for comparison to John Doe.
On 7/22/26 Othram notified detectives that DNA confirmed the man in Washinton and John Doe are biological father and son. John Doe had been identified after 39 years as Roy A. Torvik. Roy was born in Montana and lived in Idaho and Washington before moving to Polk County, Florida in the early 1960s. Roy was 59 years old at the time of his death. Now that Roy has been identified, detectives are asking anyone who knew Roy around the time of his death and may have information to contact the LCSO Cold Case Team.
