OVERVIEW:   The Lake County Sheriff's Office will utilize an Incident Command System concurrent with the State of Florida Division of Emergency Management, and as defined in the National Incident Management System and Homeland Security Directive HSPD-5 (March 1, 2004). Sheriff's Office employees are subject to being called to duty in order to assist with emergency situations.

Emergency situations may include, but are not limited to: criminal acts, natural disasters such as storms, hurricanes, floods, fires and explosions, and civil disturbances such as acts of terrorism, riots, civil disorders, protest marches and labor disputes.

MAIN DUTIES:  The main duties of the Lake County Sheriff's Office Emergency Management Bureau include but are not limited to:
  • Plans, organizes and coordinates the activities involved in implementing and coordinating comprehensive county-wide Homeland Security and Emergency Management Programs.
  • Coordinates the preparation of state and federal grants and project applications, progress reports and other material required for state and federal assistance in homeland security and emergency management activities.
  • Determines level of readiness by conducting assessments of emergency preparedness and response capabilities related to homeland security and emergency management.
  • Coordinates field forces involved in the operation during an actual emergency or threat to homeland security.
  • Conducts homeland security/emergency service drills with all public safety and emergency services agencies in the County. Designs and conducts readiness exercises, providing instruction and guidance to exercise and event participants. Evaluates effectiveness and efficiency of exercise and event responses. Compiles and prepares instructional and awareness materials.
  • Coordinates with and assists governmental, law enforcement, emergency services and others agencies in developing coordinated homeland security and emergency response plans, conferring with various public and private agencies and officials in identifying human and material resource needs and in formulating plans for resource mobilization during an emergency or threat of homeland security.
  • Retains professional knowledge and awareness of emerging homeland security and emergency management programs and components to include, but not limited to, bio-terrorism and weapons of mass destruction issues, concerns and protocols.
