The Uniform Patrol Bureau of the Lake County Sheriff's Office contains several specialized units. These units answer calls for service or respond to emergencies that would be impossible or impractical for regular Road Patrol Deputies to handle. The Deputies that work in these units are specialized deputies. They specialize in a particular area of law enforcement. This span of operation is dictated by the variety of calls for service received from the public. These special units absorb all calls for service, investigations or emergencies that cannot be handled by the other divisions.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office Mounted Posse is a voluntary organization, working in conjunction with the Sheriff's Office. The basic purpose of the Mounted Posse is to assist the office, when the use of horses is advantageous, and to provide an organization wherein the Equestrians of Lake County can assemble and provide a variety of services to Lake County.
The Sheriff's Mounted Unit is utilized primarily
for security in large parking lots, such as the Lake Square Mall.
The Rider sits above the cars which provides better visibility.
This has proven very useful in deterring crime, particularly
over the Christmas Holidays when the mall is very busy.
Membership in the Mounted Posse is open to any person over the age of twenty (20) who is of good character, who owns or has access to a horse and transportation for the horse, and who has been approved by the Sheriff's Office.
Persons applying for membership in the Mounted Posse must complete the Sheriff's Office volunteer application. Each perspective applicant will be evaluated. This evaluation will include but not limited to:
-Riding ability -Condition, ability and character of horse -Saddle and equipment of applicant -Verification of current negative Coggins
The Mounted Unit/Mounted Posse consists of three sworn Deputy Sheriff's and their horses and approximately 20 Civilian Volunteers and their horses. These Deputies and Volunteers perform various types of patrols, civic functions and searches for missing persons and/or criminals. |
